Some Guidelines
Working together for the benefit of nature!
In order for you to get the most from this group, we provide some useful guidelines to help everyone engage meaningfully and respectfully. These guidelines are here to foster positive interactions, keep discussions productive, and ensure that our shared conservation efforts thrive.
Be mindful of your posting frequency: To keep group discussions meaningful and easy to follow, avoid posting excessively. Every time you post, you capture the attention of several hundred members, so ask yourself if your contribution enhances conservation or environmental education. Excessive messages can lead to important information getting lost as members scroll through. Share relevant content thoughtfully and allow others the space to contribute without overwhelming the conversation.
Avoid chain messages and off-topic posts: Forwarded messages, especially those with sensationalized content, can often spread misinformation or unwarranted fear. We ask members to verify information before sharing and to focus on contributions that are educational or conservation-focused, particularly for North Gauteng. Content from other regions is welcome on occasion if it adds value.
Share and listen thoughtfully: Your insights and experiences are highly valued! We can all learn from each other, and sometimes, taking a moment to reflect on what’s shared before responding leads to deeper and more inclusive conversations. This balance helps everyone feel heard, and our discussions are more rewarding.
When asking for identifications: For the most accurate responses, please provide key details like the size of the object, multiple photos from different angles, and information about location and time. The more context you give, the better answers you will receive!
When offering identifications: Include a bit of background for your identification if you can—whether it’s personal experience, a reference, or supporting details. This enriches everyone’s learning, and it’s useful whether the topic is insects, tracks and signs, birds, mammals, or plants. For snake identifications, please leave it to the experts; incorrect identification can lead to serious risks and potentially fatal outcomes.
Avoid offering medical advice unless qualified: When it comes to medical questions, especially related to wildlife encounters, please refrain from giving advice unless you’re trained or qualified. In cases of injuries or bites, the best guidance is often to seek professional medical assistance directly.
